UC Santa Cruz’s second campuswide 24-hour AIDS dance-a-thon took place on January 17th, with participants raising over $2,000 through sponsors who supported their 24 hours of dancing. This amount does not include the funds collected through entrance tickets. “One hundred percent of the money goes to SHOP or Santa Cruz AIDS Project,” event organizer Carrie Sownie said.
The dancers were kept energized and motivated by different mini-activities and shows, both recreational and educational. The Student Health Outreach and Promotion Center (SHOP) offered free HIV testing for four hours; the condom co-op made an appearance; there was a lap-dance as well as limbo competition, hula hooping, black lights, and DJs. “We didn’t get to do musical chairs though,” said Sownie, “although we wanted to.”
