Student Regent D’Artagnan Scorza and Student Regent-designate Jesse Bernal visited the UC Santa Cruz campus on Friday, hosting a “Meet the Student Regent” luncheon where they encouraged students to apply for the position. UCSC Student Media hosted a press conference for the two after the luncheon, with City on a Hill Press, KZSC, SCTV and Leviathan in attendance.
Scorza, a Ph.D. student at UCLA, will be done with his term on June 30, when Bernal, also a Ph.D. student at UC Santa Barbara, will become the active student regent. The student regent is a voting member of the 26-person UC Board of Regents. This group, the governing body for the UC system, decides policies concerning student fees, enrollment and UC employee payroll.

Scorza and Bernal discussed several topics, ranging from potential increases in student fees, the recent curtail of UC undergraduate enrollment and the UC service employees contract settlement.
Both will be attending a regents’ meeting at UC San Francisco-Mission Bay from Feb. 3-5, debating such issues as long-range planning and educational policy, and will be convening a meeting of the Committee of Oversight for the DOE Laboratories run by the UC.
