Candidate Profile: Amanda Buchanan
By Ana Nicasio
Amanda Buchanan is running for SUA chair. A third-year politics and sociology double major from Oakes college, Buchanan has been a part of SUA for the last three years.
Buchanan said she is passionate about student government and feels a responsibility to give back to the SUA.
“I want to continue my involvement with SUA because they have contributed and dedicated themselves to my development and leadership skills,” she said.
Buchanan said because of her experience, she has a succinct and well-informed critique of SUA.
If elected, Amanda would like to restructure SUA to become more representative of the student body and broaden communication with student organizations. Buchanan wants to focus on promoting the opportunities that SUA has to offer, while ensuring that the student budget is transparent, understandable, and well utilized.
She believes that the strongest need of the student body is an accessible, affordable university. She hopes to address this issue by broadening opportunities for students and organizations, as well as making sure that student voices are heard.
“UCSC has a lot of banana slug pride that isn’t fully acknowledged and used to its full extent,” she said. Buchanan believes the university needs to have more collaboration between students and their student government in order to have their needs representation within their actions.
