Michael McCawley had his last day as admissions director at UC Santa Cruz on Oct. 27, said Michelle Whittingham, associate vice chancellor of enrollment management. McCawley, who planned to retire in June of 2018, told the Santa Cruz Sentinel he was fired but director of news and media relations Scott Hernandez-Jason said he cannot confirm or deny whether McCawley was fired or left on his own accord.

McCawley told the Sentinel he received a termination letter, which attributed his termination to communication style, leadership and a failure to support the goals of the campus.

During McCawley’s 36-year career at UCSC he won the Outstanding Staff award in 2011. Blia Yang is now the interim director of undergraduate admissions and was previously the associate director of undergraduate admissions.

“I’m very confident in Blia’s leadership and expertise as she leads the very dedicated and knowledgeable staff through this transition,” Whittingham said in an email. “Myself, the Division of Undergraduate Education and the campus will also do all we can to support a highly effective transition.”
