Frequently Asked Questions
Below are answers to frequently asked questions about joining City on a Hill Press. If your question is not answered below, please feel free to send an email to editors@cityonahillpress.com.
What is the time commitment?
Joining CHP required enrollment in a 2 or 5 unit course depending on the position. 2 units is equivalent to 10-12 hours of work outside of the classroom. For 5 units, the equivalent is 15-20 hours. CHP is both a class and a student-run organization and the workload is reflective of that.
How frequently does CHP hire?
Depending on available positions, City on a Hill Press hires every quarter.
How competitive are the positions?
Depending on the quarter, journalism experience is preferred, but not required for most positions. Because CHP is a student-run organization, we value community, student agency and initiative.
Are CHP positions paid?
All editorial positions at CHP are unpaid, but students receive academic credit.
Is CHP funded by the university?
CHP covers its operating and printing costs through advertising in print and online. Student Media as a whole is funded by student measures, voted on by the student body.
How often does CHP print?
CHP publishes during the week on the website and weekly in print on Thursdays.
How many students are on staff?
The staff is about 25-35 students.
