Dramatic shifts in state demographics means higher education institutions must respond to ensure that retention and graduation rates increase with the population trends. “Hispanic Serving Institutions” across the country are attempting to address these issues that come with the increasing Latin@ population. UC Santa Cruz is in the process of joining that list.

In order to apply for a “Hispanic-Serving Institution” designation, UCSC is required to meet specific targets in terms of the diversity of its student-body. As the university’s outreach programs aim to recruit underrepresented students, an era of persistent state budget cuts for the UC make it difficult for UCSC to finance its efforts.
