Battling for Wins on Two Different Fields
UC Santa Cruz men’s rugby was busy last weekend. With the squad split up, some at home to play the University of the Pacific (UOP) Tigers and others at Stanford to play in a tournament, the Slugs focused less on the results and more on how the teams can improve going forward as a whole.

When asked to describe UC Santa Cruz men’s basketball coach Ron DuBois, guard Marshal Arnwine Jr. and forward James Townsend both called him “motivating.” With the motivation of DuBois propelling the team toward the start of the season, the Slugs try to embrace their coach’s philosophy, style and ethics, believing it will translate to wins and a shot at the NCAA tournament.
Men’s Water Polo Makes Notable Progress During League Play
The men’s water polo team did a 180 last weekend. Going into their tournament with a 1-3 record, the Slugs went 3-1 to turn their season around, leading them to the league championship.
Cross Country Teams Maintain Strong Run
Men’s and women’s cross country head coach Aaron Jacobsen knows it mostly doesn’t matter how well his runners perform until November. While trophies and personal records may track the team’s progress, they are ultimately building up toward one meet, the NCAA West Regionals, which will determine whether the Slugs qualify to participate in the NCAA Championships.
UCSC Women’s Volleyball Sets Sight for Nationals
Out of the 14 NCAA Division III sports at UC Santa Cruz, all but two belong to “independent” conferences, meaning they don’t automatically qualify for the NCAA playoffs. As one of the teams that falls in this category, the women’s volleyball can only earn a spot in the NCAA tournament through a voting system. Despite their 14-3 record, seven game win streak and third straight sweep, the Slugs continue their fight to qualify for nationals.
Women’s Volleyball Slams UC Merced 3-0
UC Santa Cruz women’s volleyball swept UC Merced 25-14, 25-17 and 25-17 at home on Sept. 28. The Slugs improved to 14-3 with the win and extended their win streak to six games in their second home game of the season.
