TAPS bus driver David Keith, well known at UC Santa Cruz for playing orchestra-laden soundtracks while bringing students to class, passed away last Sunday, June 10, 2012.
A student-led Facebook page grew in support around the event of Keith’s death, with over 800 members looking to raise money for a plaque and possibly a bench in Keith’s honor.
Amy Pircher, a UCSC student organizer of the page, said that it was important for students and members of the UCSC community rally to honor Keith’s death.
“The love UCSC students have for him is something to be remembered, like Tree 9,” Pircher said. “Unlike Tree 9 he impacted everyone. We want that to be remembered and we want future students to know he existed.”
Keith sent in a letter to City on a Hill Press last summer, offering advice to rookie riders on the proper etiquette of riding the bus. Readers may find the letter here.
