The Santa Cruz Police Department (SCPD) has arrested Jesus Covarrubias, 26, of Rancho Cucamonga yesterday afternoon in connection to the hit an run on Oct. 30 that lead to the death of UCSC student Alexandria Arceneaux, according to a SCPD press release.

Arceneaux was 20 years old and died after nearly a week in intensive care. She was struck by Covarrubias’s car while crossing Highway 1 near River Street and transported to a Bay Area trauma center in critical condition.

Covarrubias turned himself into the county jail on Nov. 7. Upon further questioning by authorities, he became uncooperative and has yet to make an official statement.

The vehicle involved in the fatal incident, the 2011 Honda CRV, was found in Boulder Creek near Junction Park.

Covarrubias was booked into the Santa Cruz County Jail on charges of felony hit and run with a $10,000 bail.

Arceneaux’s family was notified immediately of Covarrubias’s arrest and thanked the community and police for their support, the press release said.
