Measure 68, the proposed referendum to fund UC Santa Cruz NCAA athletics, has passed with an 80 percent “yes” vote from the UCSC voting student body.
The fee will officially be enacted in fall of 2018 and continue for 25 years. It will charge each student $38 dollars quarterly, with 59 percent of the funds going to NCAA athletics, 33 percent going to return to aid and 8 percent going to the Educational Opportunities Program (EOP) to provide scholarships for EOP students to participate in recreational activities.
The university will also contribute $500,000 annually to NCAA athletics, as opposed to the $1 million the Chancellor’s office temporarily provided over the past four years.
UCSC will now continue to maintain its Division III NCAA athletics program, which includes 15 teams and about 300 student athletes.
