Order makes applying for the program easier

After the federal government granted California Governor Gavin Newsom’s request on April 28, CalFresh Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) cardholders can now purchase groceries online from Amazon and Walmart. The modification is an effort to safeguard residents and make grocery shopping safer.

Newsom previously issued an executive order on March 18 waiving certain requirements for applying to and staying on CalFresh. Applicants no longer have to interview in order to receive benefits, and those already on the program do not have to prove income for continued eligibility. Both waivers are temporary and are set to expire May 31 and mid-June, respectively.

The order came after CalFresh received a massive increase in applications in the weeks following Newsom’s shelter in place decree.
